The Hyperpigmentation Treatment Gap in Dark Skin Skincare

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks left behind after acne, a cut, a burn, or even mild irritation, is one of the most common reasons people with melanin-rich skin see a dermatologist. It’s also one of the most under-served in mainstream skincare advice, most of which is still written for, and tested on, lighter skin.

Why melanin-rich skin scars differently

When skin is injured or inflamed, melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, can go into overdrive as part of the healing response. In melanin-rich skin, that response tends to be stronger and longer-lasting, which is why the same blemish that fades without a trace on lighter skin can leave a mark that lingers for months, sometimes years, on darker skin.

This isn’t a flaw in darker skin. It’s a difference in how melanocytes respond to inflammation, and it means the mechanism, and the treatment, needs to be understood on its own terms rather than borrowed wholesale from research done on lighter skin tones.

What the evidence actually supports

A few ingredients have real evidence behind them for melanin-rich skin specifically, rather than assumed evidence carried over from other skin tones:

  • Azelaic acid, which has good tolerability data in darker skin alongside its pigment-regulating effect
  • Niacinamide, which reduces the transfer of pigment from melanocytes to surrounding skin cells
  • Tranexamic acid, increasingly used topically for stubborn pigmentation
  • Vitamin C in a stable, appropriately formulated form, though formulation quality varies enormously between products
  • Consistent, broad-spectrum sun protection, since UV exposure is what keeps reactivating pigment production in a mark that would otherwise fade

What doesn’t hold up as well: aggressive exfoliation and high-strength treatments pushed hard and fast, which can trigger the exact inflammatory response that causes more pigmentation in the first place. On melanin-rich skin, gentler and more consistent usually outperforms stronger and faster.

The gap this reveals

Here’s the part that matters beyond any one person’s skincare routine: an enormous amount of published, credible research exists on the biology of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in dark skin. Far less of that research has been translated into product development, meaning many of the products marketed at treating dark marks on melanin-rich skin were formulated and tested on skin that doesn’t scar the same way.
